Guitar, Bass & Ukulele Lessons in Catonsville

Experience More Than Just Lessons

At Soundcheck Rock Academy, we teach students how to play guitar, bass, or ukulele in their preferred style. Shred like Van Halen, groove like Flea, or master rhythm and songwriting; our instructors know how to get you there. We welcome kids, teens, and adults, and our lesson plans combine technique, music theory, and real-world playing skills in an environment that keeps students motivated.

You can choose 30, 45, or 60-minute weekly lessons, depending on your experience level and goals. Beginners work on the fundamentals and build strong habits right away, while more advanced students dive into topics like improvisation, alternate tunings, advanced picking techniques, and playing in multiple genres. No matter where you’re starting, you’ll get one-on-one attention and practical tools to grow as a musician.

Exciting Band Experiences

Learning how to play your instrument is only part of the story. Once you’re comfortable with the basics, you’ll have the chance to join one of our student bands. These aren’t just casual jam groups. Each band rehearses regularly, performs live shows, and develops a unique sound. Students are grouped by age and skill level, so younger kids build confidence with peers, and older students can play at a level that challenges and excites them.

Many students say this is their favorite part of the program. It’s where playing becomes personal, and where everything they’ve worked on in lessons starts to come alive. You’ll collaborate with others, work through full songs, and experience the energy of live performance in front of real audiences. Some of our students even start writing their own music or experimenting with new styles in the group setting.

Join a Music Community

Students get access to our studios during business hours for extra practice time, plus invitations to Academy Performances, open mic nights, and one-off community shows throughout the year. You’ll also receive discounts on gear, workshops, and special guest lessons, all designed to give you more ways to stay engaged.

Whether you’re picking up a guitar for the first time or returning to the instrument after a break, Soundcheck Rock Academy gives you a place to grow, connect, and sound your best. We’d love to have you join us.

About Us

About Our Teaching Style

At Soundcheck Rock Academy, we believe music lessons should be fun, motivating, and centered on creativity. Students are encouraged to bring in songs they love, and our teachers use that interest to build technique, rhythm, and theory in a way that feels personal and exciting.

We’ve created more than just a lesson space. Soundcheck is a true music community, where students rehearse, perform, and grow together. Whether you’re working one-on-one or jamming with a band, you’ll be part of an environment that values collaboration just as much as individual progress.

Professional Guitar and Bass Instructors

At Soundcheck Rock Academy, you’ll learn from experienced guitarists who have performed across the globe and in front of live audiences of every kind. Many of our instructors hold degrees in music, but what sets them apart is their real experience as working musicians.

They’ve played classical concerts, led rock bands, joined folk ensembles, and sat in with jazz combos. Whatever your goals or challenges, your teacher can demonstrate exactly what to do and how to improve. Watching them play and learning through live example gives students a deeper, more practical understanding than a method book ever could.

“WE WANT YOU TO LOVE MUSIC AND ENJOY MAKING IT!”

WHAT WILL YOU LEARN IN LESSONS?

Learn to Play Guitar Fluently

If you’re just starting out, we’ll begin with the fundamentals. You’ll learn how to hold the guitar, place your fingers correctly, and produce a clean sound from each string. We’ll introduce the names of the open strings and show you how to move between basic chord shapes. Most students start accompanying familiar songs within the first few lessons, and we make sure each step builds toward real playing, not just memorization.

As you progress, your lessons will include melody and harmony skills, chord inversions, and ways to shift keys using a capo. You’ll explore concepts like power chords, syncopation, and rhythmic strumming patterns that are essential in pop and rock. At the same time, we’ll help you read notation, recognize time signatures, and become confident in different key centers.

Advanced students work on specific techniques tailored to their interests. That might include finger tapping, sweep picking, alternate tunings, legato phrasing, or improvisation. Our goal is to make sure you’re not just learning licks, but that you’re developing a style that sounds great in a band and stands out on its own.

Bass Lessons For All Levels

The bass is all about groove and feel, and we get right to it. In your first lessons, you’ll learn how to position your hands, navigate the fretboard, and lock into simple patterns that keep the rhythm grounded. We’ll help you play along with classic bass lines and teach you how to listen like a bassist, focusing on timing, clarity, and consistency.

As you improve, we’ll explore fingerstyle and pick techniques, teach you how to follow chord progressions, and show you how to build bass lines that work with the drummer. You’ll study scales, modes, and tonal center shifts so you can adapt to different songs and genres with ease.

For more advanced players, we introduce techniques like slap and pop, double stops, artificial harmonics, and tapping. You’ll learn how to shape your tone, improvise with fluency, and develop lines that move beyond the root note without losing the groove. Whether you’re writing original parts or learning iconic riffs, you’ll walk away with confidence and creativity.

Start With the Ukulele

The ukulele is approachable, expressive, and just plain fun to play. If you’re a beginner, we’ll start with tuning, posture, and basic chords. You’ll strum through simple songs right away and start to understand how common chord progressions work. Within a few weeks, most students are comfortable playing along with recordings or singing while they play.

From there, we’ll cover fingerpicking patterns, chord melody techniques, and how to shift between strumming and plucking. You can explore pop, folk, island styles, or even classical arrangements if you’re interested. We also help students build confidence in group settings, and many use the ukulele to accompany themselves as songwriters or performers.

Whether you’re learning guitar, bass, or ukulele, you’ll leave each lesson with something new. We’d love to work with you.

Learn With Peers and New Friends

At Soundcheck Rock Academy, guitar and bass students don’t learn in isolation. Once you’re ready, you’ll have the chance to join a band with musicians at a similar level. These groups rehearse weekly and give students a space to play real songs with others, not just practice alone at home.

Performing as part of a band helps you listen better, adapt your playing, and support the energy of a group. It also brings people together. Many of our students build friendships through these rehearsals, and the shared experience of preparing for a show gives each lesson more purpose and excitement.
